I thought I would share my recent experience insuring my M-29C Weasel.  My family has used State Farm since the 50s and has always gotten competitive rates.  My GPW and WC-51 are through them and when I bought the Weasel I added it.  I took the weasel to the office for pictures and paid my premium.  Everything was good.  Two months later they sent me a letter saying they would not insure it because it was tracked and ending my insurance in a week.

    I did some research and saw a recommendation for American Modern Insurance.  I found a local agent and worked with him.  After a week and much consternation it came back at $800.  I informed him that was about $100 a mile it would be driven in the next year.

    I knew the Weasel had been with JC Taylor with the prior owner.  I submitted everything to them and its now insured.  I am probably going to move over my remaining MVs when I get my 4th one restored because they don't charge extra for parts of their insurance over 3.  Sorry State Farm but you're losing my business.

  2. I have one remaining radio mast base mount for a weasel.  This is the kind that mounts over the muffler. I fabricated this off the specifications in the manual.  The top hole is 2 1/8” as specified.  Be aware the MP-44 is just under 1 1/2” so you can fill the gap with a washer.  The hole is probably a universal size for larger antenna masts. You’ll have to drill The holes for mounting to match your weasel. $125 plus shipping or $200 if bought with radio legs I’ve listed.  Shipping in the US is about $40.  Located in Missouri.   
     

    I won’t be making any more of these.

I needed some of the legs for mounting the radio tray in the passenger compartment of my weasel so I made a couple extra sets.  They are made to the exact specifications in the manual (which gives no signal corps part number) and they fit perfectly.  You’ll have to drill the mounting holes to match your weasel and tray.  The steel requires a solid bit to drill the holes to get through this steel.

  4. This is how we did it.  It worked pretty well. We did one tighten up along the way of the comealongs.  
     

    The emotional support chocks worked well and the front ones were slightly scrunched after the catastrophic tire explosion and sudden stop along the way.  I had to work to get them removed when I off loaded it by myself.  

    The trailer didn’t have stake pockets so we tied off the frame in the front and verticles in the back.  

    We did use jackstands when loading near the rear of the trailer which was a good move.  We did have one get stuck under the trailer but we used a Jack and it came off.

  5. I have created these to chock the tracks in place.  The bungees with carabiners should keep them from falling off the trailer and hopefully next to the tracks.  The bungees are 2’ so it should go through the gaps of the grousers.  If too long I can always twist to shorten the distance.

  6. This is the index of MVPA Weasel articles.  This might be helpful to round out the number of articles on this site if people have the different Army Motors and History in Motion.  I can't speak to copyright issues but I don't think the older editions would be an issue.  I'm getting a big stash of magazines when I get my M-29C over president's day weekend so I may be able to get some of these myself.

I was looking at another source for this and I am not sure the Weasels actually made it to the stranded train.  As much as I love the story of the Weasels facilitating the rescue, they don't seem to have made it to the stuck train.  I think the photos are of them unloading to make the attempt. 

    I couldn't post the hyperlink for the story but this is what it was under.  Apparently Tucker Snow Cats are claiming a part in the rescue.  

    "Tucker to the rescue 1952 City of San Francisco" In the Outdoor and Snowcat forum.  

    "By late Monday, Southern Pacific had made arrangements with the Sixth Army Headquarters in San Francisco for three Army snow "Weasels," as well as doctors, medical supplies, food, fuel for the snow fighting equipment, and army personnel to travel by convoy to Colfax, Calif."

    "From Colfax, the equipment was loaded aboard work train Extra No. 6236 East. The plan was to have the F-unit-powered extra follow rotary No. 7209, plowing the eastbound main on Tuesday. However, the rotary ran out of fuel and water while plowing into the 10-foot drifts, and had to return to a siding at Gold Run.

    Because of the delayed plowing progress, SP decided to unload the Weasels and have them try to get through to No. 101 with medical supplies and food. Unfortunately the Weasels could not operate well in the soft snow cover, and the Army informed SP officials their plan would not work.

    Meanwhile, a group of volunteer skiers enlisted by the SP reached the train Monday night with a small amount of food and medical supplies."

    "A Pacific, Gas & Electric Sno-Cat, the only machine that could cross the drifts and snowbanks in the high Sierras."

    "A Coast Guard helicopter with a doctor, medical supplies, and food attempted to fly from Colfax to the train, but high winds at Yuba Pass prevented the helicopter from landing. The supplies were then dropped to the train."

    "Passengers carefully make their way alongside the ice-encrusted streamliner on their way to safety.

    The California Highway Department opened U.S. Highway 40 to the Nyack Lodge at Emigrant Gap. At 3:20 p.m., the passengers aboard No. 101 were led to the highway, then driven by private automobiles 5 miles to Nyack Lodge. There, SP officials had made arrangements to have everyone fed and encouraged passengers to send telegrams to their families. Southern Pacific made sure all passengers' needs were met, and because of the railroad's tremendous rescue efforts to reach the stranded train, passenger claims against the SP were minimal."

  8. FYI As a WWII Dodge owner I saw that the Studebaker Museum has production cards for vehicles including the years 1943-45.  I thought they may have something similar to the Dodge build cards. 

    I just asked the museum staff and this was their reply.  

    "Thank you for your email.  I am sorry to report we do not have build sheets for Weasels.  We do have the engineering drawings, however, for most if not all of its parts.

I've purchased a 1945 M-29C from the family of a former coworker.  It's a 600 mile 10.5 hour 2 day trip tentatively scheduled for President's Day weekend, assuming the weather through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas is permitting.  It is located just south of the Oklahoma panhandle in very north Texas.  Lots of 2 lane roads for a couple hours to get there and back. 

    I am taking my F-350 and a 2 axle 16 foot trailer rated at 5k lbs.  The photos are below although I can't explain why they present how they are upside down etc.  They aren't like that in the computer file.  The M-29C is a runner.  

    I've got a few weeks to get ready for my trip.  Here is my list of things to do and questions.

    1.  Remove all accessories and loose items like the fire extinguisher rope etc.  

    2.  Take off the top and bows.

    3.  Secure the windshield.  Question: Is there a tie down for the windshield for the brush guard on the front?

    4.  Question:  How do I secure it to the trailer?  I am thinking to use the pintle in the back as a tie down point.  Also I can likely use straps on the idler wheel trumpets crossed to the front of the trailer.  In the middle I am thinking of running one under the weasel on a middle spring to the side of the trailer...criss-crossed to the opposite side.

    5.  Question:  Better to haul facing forwards or backwards?

    6.  Question:  How do you do it?  Can people post pictures of how they do it?
